Prenatal drug exposure: behavioral functioning in late childhood and adolescence.

چکیده
The knowledge base on the long-term implications of prenatal drug exposure in human development is extremely limited, but suggests that children with drug-using parents are at high risk for nonoptimal development. The literature, however, provides some evidence that this risk is related to environmental factors. To date, there is no compelling evidence that history of prenatal drug exposure affects long-term development either directly or through transactions with experimental factors. This chapter has discussed how study of the long-term development of drug-exposed children requires careful conceptualization of issues of change and continuity in development as well as the role of biology and experience in development. Consideration of these issues will lead to fuller scientific understanding of development and also help the scientific literature better address questions of relevance to clinicians, program planners, and policymakers who are concerned with the welfare of drug-exposed children.

The combined effects of prenatal drug exposure and early adversity on neurobehavioral disinhibition in childhood and adolescence.
The negative effects of prenatal substance exposure on neurobiological and psychological development and of early adversity are clear, but little is known about their combined effects. In this study, multilevel analyses of the effects of prenatal substance exposure and early adversity on the emergence of neurobehavioral disinhibition in adolescence were conducted. Neurobehavioral disinhibition ...

Recent attempts to identify a neurocognitive profile of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have led to an emerging "generalized deficit" conceptualization marked by diffuse information processing and integration difficulties as opposed to a specific profile. This study examines whether this conceptualization can be extended to higher functioning children with PAE who are without inte...
متن کاملAssessing Latent Effects of Prenatal Cocaine Exposure on Growth and Risk of Cardiometabolic Disease in Late Adolescence: Design and Methods
Prenatal cocaine exposure has been linked to neurocognitive and developmental outcomes throughout childhood. The cardiovascular toxicity of cocaine is also markedly increased in pregnancy, but it is unknown whether this toxicity affects anthropometric growth and the development of cardiometabolic disease risk factors in the offspring across the lifespan. During the early 1990s, the Miami Prenat...

Background: Cannabinoid, particularly hashish and WIN 55212-2 (WIN), consumption during embryonic period may affect fetal growth, and the development of motor functioning, memory and cognitive functions. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of WIN 55212-2 during embryonic period on behavioral responses, as well as tissue and memory changes among neonatal rats. Methods: WIN...

BACKGROUND Prenatal alcohol exposure is associated with learning, behavioral, and academic problems even in children without the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). OBJECTIVE To examine the prenatal alcohol exposure and ability, academic achievement, and school functioning in adolescence. METHODS In a longitudinal cohort, intelligence, academic performance, and school functioning were evaluated i...
